Charitable encounters
Charity begins at home, four popular words of wisdom doled out at instances required or otherwise. This blog will illuminate diversifying connotations of charitable gestures. In effect as a person responsible for the well being of your family and friends begins at home. A charitable deed as humans taking up the onus of making an organized effort of providing basic needs to the deprived class by getting it sponsored from the privileged ones results in a charitable organization.Charitable organisations should strive towards empowering the underprivileged to build a life for themselves and their families. The funds should be utilised to create opportunities for them, one term basic needs provisions are not long term solutions. But it's not always about the needs of food , clothing and shelter there is a more important factor in the play....emotional needs.
While on such a trip of distribution I was a witness to heart melting experiences. When giving clothes to a group of differently abled kids I noticed the kids ensured the gifts were given to everyone present and absent. The kids rallied for their friends. Their camaraderie highlighting their companionship.
The same bunch later gathered around a weeping kid when his family left after visiting hours, to console him by putting their arms around for comfort while keeping their crutches aside. Thus reminded him of his switched sense of belonging.
Old age homes are a canvas of sad untold stories underneath wrinkled faces and dead eyes. Emotional breakdowns are a top tier mental status of most of the inmates. One such gentleman , on a slight touch of my hand, burst into tears thus, unfurling all the tied up fears and sadness of unspoken words and emotions. Another inmate originally from France, however was full of remorse. Accepting his present situation as a punishment for his antagonistic relationship with an IAS officer spouse and kids.
Another home gave us a glimpse of positivity where the inmates actively participated in everyday chores of their choice, following their hobbies, playing games etc. We were treated to a wonderful recital of flute by a partially blind inmate.
Kids with cognitive impairment always looked forward to floater visits more for the comestibles. The care they needed was ardous and onerous ranging from emergency medical conditions to behavioural discipline.
Charity is very broad spectrum, extensive, inclusive, far-reaching and far ranging too. Mostly giving alms, food, clothing never suffices. There should be a requisite for a very humanely sensitive approach towards the tender and fragile needs of these splintered, vanquished, subdued and somewhat overwhelmed lives. Proper professional aid for emotional intelligence, moral science lessons and career counselling for orphaned kids, sympathetic ears and optimistically inclined activities for the old age inmates, health care, hospital and emergency services for all. A well informed, trained, voluntary support system based entirely on compassionate empathy would be a life giver.
More than the goodies you carry for them, they crave for love, attention, care, empathy and sometimes solutions to their problems as happened in a village where they were more concerned with rain water flooding their homes. Delving deep you realise a desideratum for charity is not basic food and clothing, it's life - fulfilling deeds. It is not confined to old age homes or orphanages it is universal in its existence.
Straightening wrinkled brows, bringing a curve to pursed lips, getting a gleam back in dead eyes, putting an arm around heavy shoulders, Raising a bowed down head, calming down a racing heart, managing peace for a worrying mind, resting up tired legs, feeding a famished gut and caressing a trembling hand all are sublime charitable deeds.
So unreservedly, spontaneously, willingly, unabashedly and without any restraint human beings should practice acts of benevolence and benignity towards all inhabiting this heavenly globe.
